SPF + coating
Foam is the roof and the coating is its weathering surface. New foam or old, the job is a topcoat that stays elastic and blocks UV.
- 3004Closed-cell 3-lb roofing foam
- R-6.2Per inch, ASTM C 518
What happens to SPF
Spray foam does not fail. Its coating does. UV chews through a worn topcoat and starts to erode the foam surface — first to orange peel, then to a coarse popcorn texture that soaks up coating and holds water.
Recoat while the surface is still smooth to orange peel and the job is a wash and a new topcoat. Wait until popcorn and you are scarfing and re-foaming first. New foam is coated on the day it is sprayed, no primer.

A coating job when
- Existing coating worn but foam surface intact
- Texture smooth to orange peel
- Foam dry and adhered on core samples
- New foam coated on the day it is sprayed
Not a coating job when
- Popcorn or treebark texture across the field — scarf and re-foam first
- Saturated foam on core cuts
- Bird pecking or mechanical damage into the foam
Not sure? Send photos and a core cut. A rep will call it.
The build-up, in order.
The standard SPF topcoat: high solids, one product, and it does not mind the ponding that shows up on foam roofs. For well-drained foam roofs where reflectivity and cost lead. Two coats, applied at right angles.
Clean & prep
Wash and let the foam dry. Cut and fill damaged areas with fresh foam. Scarf and re-foam any field past verge of popcorn.
New foam pass
Optional · offOne-inch lift of 3004 over a prepared roof, for re-foam jobs or added R-value. Coat it on the day it is sprayed.

Mastic at penetrations, drains and terminations. Foam self-flashes the curbs, so seams are not the issue here.

Two passes at right angles. Rougher texture takes more per square — the estimator allows for it.
